The photosensitive layer in the unexposed areas (corresponding to the imaged areas of the original) undergoes a cross-linking reaction, remaining as the oleophilic imaged areas.

Unlike negative-working PS plates, where image areas are retained after development, the positive PS plate removes image areas during development.
